Talk Postponed. (17th March 2020):  Dere Street

Following discussions with the Speaker, David Jones, the Chairman and Secretary, the society has reluctantly taken the decision to postpone the meeting on 17th March.   We will rearrange this talk for later in the year.

David Jones will present a talk, “Dere Street“.

Best known as a Roman road, Dere Street connected York with northern Britain, allowing troops and traders to travel up to Hadrian’s Wall, into Caledonia and link up with the roads at the Antonine Wall.

But the route is much more than a Roman road. With its origins lost in prehistory, it has continued in use until the present day, and where it crosses the unspoilt landscape of the Cheviots traces of thousands of years of activities can be seen all along the way. This illustrated talk will describe just some of these, bringing to life soldiers and smugglers, farms and forts.

David Jones

David moved to Northumberland when he retired in 2003. After a career in technology, he developed a keen interest in landscape archaeology and is secretary of Coquetdale Community Archaeology. He has planned and organised excavations and managed projects on a wider scale, writing a couple of books in the process.
